Here's an example of the format I might use for the entries on this page:"ChicagoPoetry.com" <publisher@chicagopoetry.com> Subject: POETRY CONTEST DEADLINE LOOMS
The competition is going to be fierce, because we've received a volume of entries for this--but for those of you who believe in your own poetry, there is only ONE WEEK LEFT to enter ChicagoPoetry.com's Frieda Stein Fenster Memorial Award for Poetry. All entries MUST be postdated no later than February 15, 2004 (due to the nature of the contest, there can be no extensions made to this deadline). I've included details below. Winners will be announced in March and the first place winner will read the winning poem at The Guild Complex on April 7.
======================================= THE FRIEDA STEIN FENSTER MEMORIAL AWARD
Contest Entries Should Be Mailed To: C. J. Laity, 5018 N. Lincoln Ave. #2, Chicago, IL 60625
(Please make check or money order payable to the order of C. J. Laity.)
Announcing:
The First Annual Frieda Stein Fenster Memorial Award For Millennial Poetry, sponsored by ChicagoPoetry.com.
GUIDELINES FOR THE 2004 CONTEST.
PRIZES
First Prize:
* The first prize winner will receive a featured reading during CHICAGO POETRY UNCENSORED on Wednesday, April 7 at The Guild Complex**, where the prize winners will be announced to the public. The Guild Complex show will be promoted by press release to all major Chicago periodicals by ChicagoPoetry.com; this will be done in addition to the Guild Complex's** usual press releases. The winner's feature will be part of a larger poetry party, which will include readings by other well known Chicago poets; it will be a great opportunity for the winner of the contest to be put into the spotlight.
* The first place winner will also receive publication of the winning poem (along with the author's photo, biography and / or contact information) on winning poet's own page at ChicagoPoetry.com, including a personalized link to that page which will be clearly visible on the home-page, to appear for one year (with an estimated traffic of 175,000 page views), and thereafter to be permanently archived at the site. This valuable advertising will help to introduce the winning poet to other important people in the poetry community.
* The first prize winner will also receive $100 and an Award Certificate.
Second Prize:
* The second place runner up will receive $50, an Award Certificate, publication of the winning poem at ChicagoPoetry.com, and two free tickets to the Guild Complex** show.
Third Prize:
Third place runner up will receive $25, an Award Certificate, publication of the winning poem at ChicagoPoetry.com, and two free tickets to the Guild Complex** show.
* All poets are welcome to enter this contest, regardless of writing style or geographic location.
* All lengths of poetry will be considered.
* Poetry must be in English; however, dialect and bi-lingual poems will also be considered, as long as English is the primary language used.
* This contest is open to both published and non-published poets. Previously published poems will be considered for this contest. Both "page" and "stage" poets will be given equal consideration. We are simply looking to find the three best poems out of all entries, regardless of their origin.
* Winning poets will be invited to (but not required to) read during the award ceremony portion of the ChicagoPoetry.com sponsored Guild Complex** event in April of 2004.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO ENTER
* Poems entered into this contest must be typewritten (ink jet or other printer is okay) on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper. Poet's name SHOULD NOT appear on page(s) of poetry.
* Please submit four (4) copies of each poem (this does not apply to poetry already submitted prior to 12/03/03).
* A cover letter containing the poet's name, address, telephone number, e-mail address (if any) and the TITLE OF THE POEM(S), must accompany each entry.
* Poems must be mailed (postage paid) to the address below. No poems will be accepted for this contest by email or by any other electronic means. No computer disks. No poems will be returned.
* Please include a self addressed stamped envelope if you would like to be notified by mail of the results of the contest.
* Entry fee: $10. Please send entry fee in the form of a check or money order made out to C. J. Laity (please do not make check out to any other name). Entry fees will help fund the prize money as well as the promotion for the winning poet's feature presentation at The Guild Complex**.
To pay entry fee by credit card, CLICK HERE. Poetry entered into this contest by credit card through PayPal must be mailed following the instructions on this page, along with a short note explaining that entry has been pre-paid.
If you dare send cash through the U.S. mail, wrap it in several pages of thick paper (we will not be held responsbile for cash sent through the mail, but if it arrives, we will accept it). Submissions can also be hand delivered to the Publisher of ChicagoPoetry.com.
* Poets may enter more than one poem for consideration, but each poem must be accompanied by a $10 entry fee (per poem). There is no limit as to how many poems may be submitted; each poem will be given equal consideration.
* Winners will be announced at or prior to an April, 2004, reading sponsored by ChicagoPoetry.com, to be held at the Chopin Theater during the Guild Complex's 2004 Literary Series**.
** IMPORTANT: Though this contest may involve some indirect participation by The Guild Complex, After Hours Magazine, or other Chicago poetry institutions, it should be clearly noted that this poetry contest is being sponsored solely by ChicagoPoetry.com, which maintains complete responsibility for it, and any inquiries regarding this contest should be made only to ChicagoPoetry.com, or its publisher, C. J. Laity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHY AN ENTRY FEE?
Chicago Poets,
Come on, let's be honest. ChicagoPoetry.com has been serving Chicago's poetry community for going on four years, and (besides a few scattered but generous donations given by some of the leaders in the poetry scene) we have asked for nothing in return. It is because of this that we simply can't afford to throw a contest of this magnitude without an entry fee. Poetry contests mean more when they pay for themselves, and the more entries we get, the bigger we can make the grand prize winner's feature; for example, if we get enough entries, we could use the money to place a large ad in the Chicago Reader promoting the first place winner's feature at The Guild Complex. Think about how valuable all the information we provide is, and then think about how small a $10 entry fee is--then send us your best poem. Maybe you'll will be the Winner
